In All Things Exhibition Captures Mary's Spirit

In All Things is Guy Detot’s unique exhibition of Penola red gum sculptures that capture the spirit of Mary MacKillop as a nurturing ‘mother’ and child.

These special sculptures were commissioned by Josephite Affiliated Secondary Schools Principals, who held their annual conference at Penola in May. On visiting Guy’s Le Max gallery they were inspired by his beautiful work in red gum from the locality where Mary’s life’s work began. They asked him to provide 25 sculptures for their schools in Australia and New Zealand, as a centenary celebration.

Guy said, ‘They wanted to know how I felt about Mary MacKillop. I talked about education and how important it was to look after children who needed nurturing. I love that side of her. Despite all the problems she faced with the hierarchy, she was always a teacher and the education of children came first.

And what is fascinating for me as an artist is to be given the freedom to interpret and create so many pieces that are all different, but which have the same feeling.’

Along with Veronica Tomic's Love Beyond Borders exhibition, Guy's In All Things exhibition will be opened in the Schoolhouse by leading local artist and gallery owner, Lois Hodge, at 11.00am on Saturday 8th August 2009, the centenary of Mary MacKillop’s death.

All are welcome to visit the Centre and view both exhibitions, which will be open until 14th September.
