Mary MacKillop Centenary Celebrations
- commemorating the 100th anniversary of her death
Friday, 7th August – Liturgy for the Schools 10.30am
The Mary MacKillop Memorial School has organised a combined schools liturgy with students from St Malachy’s, Edenhope; Tenison Woods College, Mount Gambier and St Anthony’s School, Millicent.
It will be held at Rymill Hall, Penola, at 10.30am after which lunch will be a BBQ at Mary MacKillop Memorial School.The students will visit the Mary MacKillop Centre in the afternoon.
All are welcome to attend at Rymill Hall and the BBQ at the school.
Saturday, 8th August – Mass at 9.00am
Fr Paul Gardiner SJ will celebrate Mass at 9.00am in St Joseph’s Church, Penola.
After Mass all are invited to the Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre for Devonshire tea which will be served all day. Entry will be free to all visitors.
Saturday, 8th August – Opening of Art Exhibitions at 11.00am
Local artist and gallery owner, Lois Hodge, will open two special exhibitions in the Schoolhouse:
Love Beyond Borders – The vibrant contemporary paintings by Veronika Dimac, a Catholic artist from Melbourne, portray Mary MacKillop in a creative way.
In All Things – Guy Detot, Penola artist, was commissioned to create these red gum sculptures by a group of Josephite Affiliated Catholic School Principals who visited Penola.He has captured the loving spirit of Mary MacKillop in the warmth and individuality of beautiful wood from this district.
Saturday 8th August – Mary MacKillop Mass at Civic Hall, Portland at 8.00pm
Latin Mass at 6.00pm followed by the Cantata Mass at 8.00pm, as at Mount Gambier on 9th August.

Sunday 9th August – Mary MacKillop Mass at Mount Gambier at 2.00pm
A major new Australian choral work has been created by Nicholas Bug. The Australian Cantata Mass musically recounts Mary’s struggle and celebrates her life.
It will take place in the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre at 2.00pm
