Penola Plans for Canonisation

Celebrate the Canonisation of Blessed Mary MacKillop

Fri 15, Sat 16 & Sun 17 Oct

Mary MacKillop Penola Centre, Fri & Sat 10am-4pm, Sun 10am-9pm
Tours of the Woods MacKillop schoolhouse and the interpretive centre. Be inspired by the fascinating story of Mary’s life, from her birth in Melbourne to her final years in Sydney, with a focus on the pivotal Penola years. Cost: $5 adults, $3.50 group booking of 10 or more, school students free. www.mackilloppenola.org.au


Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations and Barrel Series 13 Auction

A three-day event showcasing Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and the craftsmanship of the region’s winemaking community. Visit cellar doors for tastings, masterclasses, tutorials, live music, entertainment, gourmet food and fantastic wines! Mary MacKillop Street Festival, 10am–9pm (Free)
Regional food, arts, history and entertainment in the township presented by the local community. Featuring cafes, retailers, stall holders, vendors, horses, costumes, the local Farmer’s Market and more.

The Life and Work of Mary MacKillop, St Joseph’s Church, 10am-2pm (Free)
Local historian Margaret Muller talks about Mary’s life in Penola, Sister Elizabeth Morris speaks about life as a Josephite today and the Southern Heritage Singers will entertain and inspire. Commencing on the hour.

Sites of Significance (Free)
Visit local historical sites at your leisure including the site of the original stables in Mary MacKillop Park, Petticoat Lane’s historical cottages, Tenison Woods sculptures and Father Woods Tree.

Procession, 2pm (Free)
Led by the local Caledonian pipe band, a procession will travel through Penola from Mary MacKillop Park to the large outdoor stage where singing and celebrations will take place prior to the Penola Mass. Line the sidewalk to watch the parade travel along Penola’s historical streets.


Penola Concelebrated Mass, 3pm–4.30pm (Free – register at VenueTix)
Mass on the outdoor stage led by Archbishop Leonard Faulkner with Father Richard Morris and Father Peter Fountain celebrates Mary’s remarkable journey from local legend to Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop.

Dinner break, 4.30pm-6.30pm
Take your time to enjoy flavours from the Limestone Coast and entertainment on the stage prior to the commencement of the live television broadcast from Rome.

Live television broadcast from Rome, 6.30pm-9pm (Free)
The big outdoor screen in Penola will cross live to Rome for the canonisation ceremony. Watch as Mary’s relics are placed by the alter, and listen to the choir sing during this historical event.
The Eucharist follows the canonisation ceremony. Seated event. Dress warmly.
